Dear God:
Thank you for Mommy and Daddy and Caleb and Norah.
Mommy is sitting with me.
Daddy is outside mowing the lawn.
I'm thankful for Jesus' son, Jesus.
Thank you for Mommy's ring and Daddy's ring.
Thank you for Mommy's jeans and my pants and panties and my shoes.
Amen.

Character Development
God has really challenged me this year. We're only 4 1/2 months in, but I am feeling stretched and unsatisfied with myself.
1. Almost four months ago, he brought a scripture to my attention. It was inconspicuous. It wasn't even a main verse from my study. But I cannot seem to forget it.
"but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her children." I Thessalonians 2:7
Here, Paul is talking about how he dealt with the believers in Thessalonica. When I read this, I immediately evaluated myself as a mother. Am I gentle with my children? With my husband? With other believers? Not so much. Nope. Maybe.
2. Another scripture is one that I have taken out of context a bit, but have applied to my own life.
"For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations." Ephesians 2:14-15
Really, I just took the parts that say, "the dividing wall of hostility," and "the law with its commandments and regulations." Now, I know that these verses refer to Jesus abolishing the law of Moses and bringing the world under the law of grace.
But...
I began to look at my own laws and regulations that I've been imposing on others. On my children. On my husband. Sometimes we refer to these as expectations.
Have I built walls of hostility with my expectations? Why yes. Yes I have. Abolish them! Let grace abound!
3. General things I'm being challenged to change: Acting or speaking in anger, being head-strong and difficult with my husband, and controlling myself.

Nanna's Clock
I ran across this scrap of paper recently.
I wrote this down as I walked through my grandmother's house after her funeral. The stove was the first thing I looked at when I walked through the door. Nanna was always cooking up something delicious. I pictured her standing at that stove, boiling potatoes or cooking up some Velveeta Shells & Cheese.
As I stood there, the clock on the stove caught my eye. I can't remember if it was a digital or analog clock, but that's not really important. I just remember being caught off guard by the time displayed on the clock.
3:16.
The clock was no longer ticking. It had stopped keeping time, just like Nanna. I was taken aback by the grace of God. As far as I remember, my Nanna was a believer. A feeling of excitement came over me. This small, insignificant detail brought had me joy and peace.
And it still does today.

Quote of the Day
Oh, what a tender-hearted young man we have!
To give you some context for today's quote, he said this while watching a commercial for Cook's Children's Hospital. The commercial was featuring the neonatal intensive care unit. Caleb's eyes were glued to the screen the moment he saw babies. He really have a soft spot for newborns. And that's a great thing since we're expecting one so soon!

Spring Mantle
For the spring mantle, I used a lot of things I already had, but there were a few things I just couldn't resist adding to the mix.
1. Images: Just as with the pictures from the Christmas and Valentine's mantles, I printed images from the internet and simply matted them with scrapbook paper and framed them. The butterfly image is actually taped right onto the glass of the large frame, covering our engagement photo.
2. Art: The Bubble Art in the dead center is Caleb's Craft from this week. I just made sure that we used pastel colors to go with the spring themed mantle. The giant, brightly colored Easter egg was painted by yours truly. A gallery worthy effort, I assure you.
3. White Ceramic Bird: 50% off at Michael's this week. I paid $3.50 for her.
4. Yellow Candle: A gift that had been hanging out in the bathroom. I simply relocated it.
5. Pregnant Willow Tree Figurine: Already had it. It was a gift from my first pregnancy. You know, when I was toting Caleb around in my uterus. Fun times.
6. White Vase: Actually not a vase, but a juice bottle I picked up at Marshall's almost a year ago. It's been in the kitchen cabinet since I brought it home...unused.
7. Cherry Tree Branches: 40% off at Michael's this week. I paid $6.00 for them. Silk and indestructible.
8. Praying Angel Willow Tree Figurine: Already had it. A gift from I can't remember. Oops.
9. Dark Brown Iron Cross: Already had it. And it's been seen in a few previous mantles as well.
Although this season is a fun time for Easter Eggs Hunts and lies about the Easter Bunny, I strive to teach my children the true meaning of Easter, or Resurrection Sunday. There is nothing more important than the truth that our dear Savior rose from the grave on the third day and sits at the right hand of God this very day, interceding on our behalf.

A Glimpse
This one is really hard to explain, but I want to document it nonetheless.
Last night I was giving the kids a bath after they had been playing in the sandbox outside. Praise the Lord for beautiful weather, by the way. As they were standing in the tub, I became inexplicably overwhelmed at the sight of my two children. Nothing extra special was happening. I was just in awe of the work of the Creator. He creates perfectly. He creates with such care. He allows me to be a part of the process.
All of a sudden, I became incredibly appreciative that God has allowed me to birth, love, teach, and witness these two lives. And then came the realization that there will soon be a third little body using that very bathtub.
Blessed for a third time. Challenged for a third time. Sustained through a third pregnancy. Lord willing, we will welcome a third child into this world in early October.
So, there you have it. Several of you already know. Several of you are hearing this for the first time. I ask each of you to join us in praying for the growth, development, and overall health of this child I cannot even detect yet. May God receive all the glory for his work in our lives.

Hand of God
Let's see if I can tell this in an easy-to-understand kind of way...
The other day, after I put the kids to bed, Caleb had gotten out of his bed for the 3rd time. He had come to find me in the bedroom. I was frustrated at his 3rd attempt to avoid going to sleep, so I started (really) yelling at him.
After only a few seconds of using my "stern voice," I felt three short taps in the middle of my back. For real. So real that I turned around to see who had tapped me in the back.
I thought maybe Jadie had come home early (he was across town playing basketball). No. No one was there. At least not visibly, anyway.
I heard the Holy Spirit tell me to control myself. "In your anger do not sin." Ephesians 4:26 The Scripture was not going through my head at the time, but it's hte gist of what I heard the Holy Spirit say to me that night.
I went back into Caleb's room to apologize for my angry words and to explain why I had become to exasperated. I made sure to love on him before leaving his room for the night.
I cannot recall a time in my life when God has made himself so physically present with me. I couldn't see Him, but I felt him without a doubt!

Thankful
Mother's Day Out.
And not just for the reason you think. Yes, it is a treat to have some time with only Sarah to tote around or entertain at home.
But the reason I am thankful for Mother's Day Out today is the fact that Caleb's teachers are teaching him Bible stores, Biblical truths, and Bible-based songs. On Sunday, out of the blue, Caleb started singing "Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-contro-o-ol."
I asked him what that song was and he said, "It's the fruits of the spirit."
I asked him where he learned it and he said, "Preschool."

Thankful
Today I am thankful for sweet time with Caleb. Several highlights from today:
- Caleb's Bible Study class came to sing to our two-year old class this morning. He really wanted a hug, but was satisfied with me "throwing" him a hug. So sweet.
- On the way to the car after Bible Study, we stopped to look at a pile of wet leaves. There were actually all 5 fall colors represented! Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Brown.
- When we got home, we played Hide-and-Seek for a few rounds. How fun it was to watch his face when he found me!

A Word About Parenting
For quite a while now, I've been on a roller coaster in regards to parenting Caleb.
Sometimes I feel like I'm really on top of things. I control my emotions, I give clear instructions, and I remain patient as I repeat myself for the 5th and 6th time.
Most recently, I have felt very out of control. I have been whining, yelling, and punishing him for every little thing. I can sense the hatred in my voice. I know that the hatred comes from my annoyance at his behavior, but that it comes across as contempt for him as a person.
These are not my true feelings and I don't want to break his spirit or increase his negative behavior. Yes, he needs to obey, he should always be respectful, and he should be kind to others. Inappropriate behaviors are still unacceptable. There should be consequences. But the consequence should not be threatening to his self-esteem.
I think you're getting the picture in terms of how I've been reacting to his negative and inappropriate behaviors. With that said, I came to a point last night where I realized how out of control I was. I had lost control of my own emotions and my own reactions. Every misbehavior was being met with anger and frustration. Honestly, I reached a point where I was afraid of what my next response might be.
I spent some time last night confessing my situation to my close girlfriends. They reassured me and encouraged me in my efforts.
This morning, I got the word. You know, the much-needed word from God. Two words. Consistently calm. He said I needed to remain consistently calm. I realize that I need his help with this one. And I pray that he will.
I had my first test already this morning. I remained calm as I outlined the boundaries for Caleb's behavior. I remained calm as he pushed through the boundary. I remained calm as I enforced the consequences. Caleb responded much more cooperatively than when I react in anger.
I pray that with God's help, I can reestablish a calm, loving, productive system for guiding Caleb toward appropriate, respectful behavior in all situations.

Scooting Sarah
Sarah's been working hard! If she's motivated enough, she'll sort of army crawl across the room to get to what she wants. Otherwise, she's content to sit in one place and play with her toys.
In other news, I'm still hoping she'll drop her last night feeding so I can sleep through the night. Prayers welcome!

Another Boring Narrative Post
Since I posted last Wednesday for St. Patty's Day, I've been busy.
Jadie took care of the kids for me from the time I left Friday morning until I returned Sunday afternoon. That's right, almost three whole days! What a blessing he was to me this weekend! Where did I go, you ask? To Tyler, Texas, of course!
Our church held the annual Women's Retreat at Pine Cove amid the tall pine trees, on the beautiful banks of Lake Palastine, in the falling snow. Yes, you read that right. Snow. The snow fell on us from late Saturday night until after breakfast Sunday morning.
I was feeling frustration and disappointment as I lay awake until 1:30 am Saturday morning. I had been counting on getting a solid night's sleep since Sarah's still not sleeping through the night here at home. although it didn't happen the first night, I managed a decent block of sleep the second night. Enough about sleep, let me tell you what we did.
Friday night, we enjoyed a time of praising our Lord with songs and studying the character of a few women in the Bible. We talked and laughed until it was time to hit the bunk beds.
Saturday we enjoyed a hearty breakfast, worshiped God some more and studied a couple more ladies from the Bible. We worked on creating our very own quilt blocks, which I have not yet completed and we scattered all over Tyler for some free time. During free time, I chose to hitch a ride to Tyler with 4 other ladies who dropped me off at Starbucks to meet my cousin Melissa. She took me to my grandparents house (whom I have not seen since Thanksgiving) where we visited for a while until my mom arrived. Mom, Granny, PawPaw, and I enjoyed a tasty dinner together at the Farmhouse restaurant in Van. We took PawPaw back to the house and I let Mom and Granny navigate me back to Pine Cove so I could rejoin in the Women's Retreat activities. My favorite parts of the weekend (with the exception of seeing my family) were still to come. The Variety Show was hysterical as usual and I always enjoy staying up late telling stories and laughing until my stomach hurts. Fun times!
Sunday morning we wrapped things up and headed home. Jadie was still standing...did I mention he had help from his mom? I'm sure glad he did!
Jadie had the day off Monday, so we spent it running errands. So helpful considering I would usually have to do these alone with the two kiddos. Thank you hubby!
Tuesday was supposed to be back to normal: Jadie to work and me and the kids getting things done around the house. But other plans were in store for us. Jadie's truck sputtered and died fifteen miles down the highway requiring an $80 tow back into town followed by $200 in repairs. Apparently his ignition coil was damaged and needed replacing. We got things taken care of though, and Jadie handled himself with such patience and calm. I am so thankful for the way that he's allowing God to change his heart and attitude.
Wednesday Sarah woke up feeling icky, but we trudged on to Bible Study. She was fussy for a bit, but seemed to be herself after being fed. We made a quick trip to the grocery store for some sandwich items and basic stuff like milk, bread, and eggs. She fell asleep sitting up in the grocery cart. By the time Jadie got home from work, she seemed a little warm, but I didn't really think much of it. I should have. Buy 8:30 last night, her fever was 103, so we hurried to the Urgent Care Clinic here in town. She has a milk ear infection and likely has a viral infection that she's fighting off.
Today the kids and I are sticking around here to rest and hopefully get Sarah's fever under control with Mortin. In happy news, we should be receiving our Dyson Animal Vacuum today. No, we didn't shell out the $599 that it retails for. Jadie used rewards points from work to purchase it. I can't wait to see how well it works, but I can wait to see all the nasty stuff it sucks out of our carpet.

Happy St. Patrick's Day
We wore our green to Bible Study Fellowship this morning. Sarah wore her green dress from Jadie's grandmother, Caleb wore a dark green shirt, and I wore a green and brown floral dress.
Here are the munchkins...

"Spring Break"
Ok....I'll start moving the crazy stretched photo of my dear sister on down the blog lines...
Although we're not in school yet or anything, our Bible Study is not meeting this week due to Spring Break, so we've been around the house more than usual.
There have been two unrelated events from this week that were worthy of me busting out the camera.
1. I couldn't find Caleb to wake him up from his nap.
Yes, that's right. He was under his bed with Patches, sleeping on our card table, which is stored under his bed.
2. I still LOVE the idea of a sit-n-spin! Does anyone else remember these? We got one for Caleb for Christmas (maybe?) and he hasn't really been super interested in it. It does play music, though, so he occasionally turns it on to listen to that. So, yesterday I sat Sarah on it just for grins. She was content just sitting there (obviously not turning herself on it), so I went about my business. I left the room and came back to this:

Way Overdue
You may have noticed that I deleted my 2010 goals from the sidebar over there ---------------------->
That's because I'm doing a horrible job of working toward any of them. I feel like any given day I'm just treading water, trying to stay on top of taking care of the kids, washing the laundry, fixing meals, getting the bills paid, and preparing for our weekly Bible study. So, please forgive me for misleading you into thinking that I might actually attain my lofty goals. Honesty with myself is more important than feeling inadequate anyhow.
Since I last posted, a few things have happened...
1. Feb 23: We had SNOW! Over 6 inches is unheard of for Central Texas and making a snowman of substantial size is even more unlikely.
2. Feb 25: I hung some pictures on the wall. I know, quite the show-stopping news. First, I made a plan by creating sheets of paper to match the sizes of my frames. Then I marked on the papers where I would need to hammer in the nails. Then I hammered in the nails and replaced the papers with my picture frames.
The plan:
The finished wall:
3. Feb 25: Caleb got his ears pierced. Oh, you were paying attention! Correction: He pretended to wear earrings. Which he will tell you is silly because girls wear earrings.
4. Feb 26-28: We paid a little visit to Ft. Worth.
We were overdue for a visit with our friends the McGowans. Nicole & DJ also have two kiddos, a boy and a girl. Aaron is six, and Lillie is 20 months. The kids enjoyed playing together while I caught up with Nicole. Then the kids and I headed over to Granana's for the weekend Fun times with mom and Kristin!

5. Feb 15-now: Jadie continues to make improvements to the bathrooms, mostly Caleb's right now. We had new vanity tops installed on February 18th and we've been working on peeling off wallpaper, repairing drawers and painting cabinets since then. I've only really helped with that first task. Jadie did all of the painting, mostly over the weekend while we were in Ft. Worth. Remember, this is a work in progress, so no judging until it's complete. Only encouragement, please!
